| The
scheme went into operation in early September 1999 and in the first 4 weeks,
the Bobby man visited 32 homes, giving advice and fitting improved security
devices. The Bobby scheme is now receiving approximately 500 referrals every year. The Bobby man, Roger Tuck is becoming well known, getting to know people right across the community. His distinctive van and logo is a regular and comforting sight around the county. |

| Roger is a trained carpenter/lock fitter and crime prevention advisor and he will normally respond to a victim within days of a crime, following a referral from the police or other local agencies such as Victim Support. | ||
| He assesses each case individually and fits whatever security devices are necessary to ensure the property is secure. He is able to spend time explaining the procedures, all the time being receptive to the victims' concerns. |
|
|
| There is no charge at all for this service | ||
|
The Bobby man is dressed in uniform similar to the local police in order to offer reassurance to victims, he also carries an ID card with him at all times. |
| The scheme gives peace of mind for older people knowing that help is at hand. Mr Bobby provides immeasurable reassurance by making their homes secure against the possibility of further break-ins. |

| ~ BOBBY SCHEME UNDER THREAT ~ |
| The
Partnerships four Bobbymen who carry out on average 1800 referrals to
elderly or vulnerable people each year may be under threat. The Partnership
relies on funding from a variety of sources and the Trust Administrator has
been notified that a major source from government will cease in March
2006. The consequences of this would be a reduction in the number of
Bobbymen the Partnership could support which at a time when there is more
demand than ever for the Bobbymen to carry out visits would clearly have an
impact on elderly or vulnerable victims of crime. This news has just been received and the Partnership will be making every effort to secure funding to maintain this valuable service. |
