During 1996 Bedfordshire Police researched the opportunities for
the development of sponsorship initiatives under the Police and Magistrates
Court Act and, as a result of this research, decided that the best way forward
would be the formation of a Partnership Trust.
This would seek charitable status and would be open to any community group to
make application for funding, for initiatives that had the potential to improve
the quality of life of communities in Bedfordshire - such as crime prevention,
road safety and drugs awareness projects. The partnership funding can be made
available to any community based group and is closely linked with beat officers
involved in community-based duties such as crime prevention and school liaison.

The
formation of a Charitable Partnership Trust by the police was unique and
considered by the Police Authority and Bedfordshire Police to be the most
effective way of developing sponsorship in the county. Such a partnership with
the business world provides vital finance for local initiatives supported by
the organisational skills of the police and makes possible the aspirations of
community groups. It also demonstrates how industry can have a beneficial
impact on the problems affecting communities.
The funding
has made such a difference to us and we thank the Partnership
so much.

The Bedfordshire Police Authority and Bedfordshire Police see the formation of
the Bedfordshire Police Partnership Trust as a long-term initiative that
provides finance for a whole range of community projects and also improves the
relationship and communication between the police and business and industry
in the county.
Thank you
for your support, it has helped young people understand more about policing
problems.
