During 1996 Bedfordshire Police researched the opportunities for
the development of sponsorship initiatives under the Police and Magistrates
Court Act and, as a result of this research, decided that the best way forward
would be the formation of a Partnership Trust. The key aim was to engage with
the business community in Bedfordshire and to seek their direct support as
"Partners".
On the 16th September 1997, the Bedfordshire Police Partnership Trust was
formally recognised and registered with the Charity Commission. |

Initially this charitable status allowed any community group to make
applications for funding, for initiatives that had the potential to improve the
quality of life of communities in Bedfordshire - such as crime prevention, road
safety and drugs awareness projects. The partnership funding was made available
to any community based group and closely linked with beat officers involved in
community-based duties such as crime prevention and school liaison. This
initial idea led to the creation of further initiatives with the introduction
of the Driver awareness programme in 1997, followed by the launch of the
"Bobby Scheme" in 1999 which provides a direct service to elderly and
vulnerable victims of crime. |

The
formation of a Charitable Partnership Trust by the police was unique and
considered by the Police Authority and Bedfordshire Police to be the most
effective way of developing sponsorship in the county. Such a partnership with
the business world provides vital finance for local initiatives supported by
the organisational skills of the police and makes possible the aspirations of
community groups. It also demonstrates how industry can have a beneficial
impact on the problems affecting communities. In the last 15yrs over 18000
households have received a visit from the "Bobby Scheme" and over
1500 community based grants have been awarded. |

The formation of the Bedfordshire Police Partnership Trust was a long-term
initiative which has provided finance for a whole range of community projects,
secured countless people's homes and made our roads safer. Over the last 15yrs
the "Partnership" has had a tangible impact of improving the
relationship and communication between the police, business and industry in the
county. |

to improve the quality of life of all communities in Bedfordshire,
especially the more vulnerable groups. |
 |
to support community based initiatives such as crime prevention, community
safety, drug awareness, schools liaison, road safety and accident prevention.
|
 |
to offer the business community a way of supporting and working with their
local police in tackling the important issues of maintaining a safe and happy
environment for their customers and staff. |
